Dr. Gregory B. Cogan obtained his PhD in Neuroscience and Cognitive Science at the University of Maryland, College Park, followed by postdoctoral work at the Center for Neuroscience at New York University (CNS - NYU) and in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Duke University. Dr. Cogan is currently an Asociate Professor at Duke University in the Department of Neurology, Department of Neurosurgery, Biomedical Engineering, and Psychology and Neuroscience, and is the Director of Research for the Duke Comprehensive Epilepsy Center (DCEC). His lab aims to understand both the neural mechanisms associated with how the brain produces and comprehends speech, as well as to develop tools to restore these abilities in patients who have lost their ability to speak due to debilitating motor diseases. This work is carried out using human intracranial recordings with patients that are in the epilepsy monitoring with stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) electrodes as well in the operating room with awake patients using high-density micro-electrocorticographic recordings (µECoG).
