Dr. Hurlbert has been a practicing Neurosurgeon for 30 years, divided between Canada and the United States. He served as Program Director for 11 years at the University of Calgary, and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons Neurosurgery Examination Board for 10 years during which he was Chief Examiner in Neurosurgery for 5. He was the founding president of the Canadian Spine Society and is a past Chair of the AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves. In 2016 he was recruited to the University of Arizona where he currently Professor and Vice-Chair of the Department of Neurosurgery, Program Director, and the Chief of Spinal Neurosurgery. He is an examiner with the American Board of Neurological Surgery. Dr Hurlbert’s clinical interests encompass spinal cord injury and complex cervical decompression and reconstruction. His research efforts are directed towards spinal cord injury and degenerative spine disease. He has helped to train over 50 Complex Spine Fellows (ortho and neuro) and even more Neurosurgery Residents in his career to date.
