Dr. Stéphan Chabardes is a Professor of Neurosurgery and Head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the Grenoble Alpes University Hospital.
Dr. Chabardes relocated to Grenoble in 1993, where his early training and interest in functional neurosurgery were strongly shaped by the pioneering work of Professors Benabid and Pollak, who were the first to perform deep brain stimulation (DBS) in patients with Parkinson's disease. Under the mentorship of Professor Benabid, he developed extensive clinical expertise in DBS and epilepsy surgery.
In parallel to his clinical work, Dr. Chabardes has been deeply involved in translational research, at the Grenoble Institute of Neurosciences.
In 2016, he joined the Clinatec-CEA-Leti Center as Clinical research leader and became scientific director of Clinatec in 2025.
Dr. Chabardes is co-author of over 200 international publications. He also serves as the principal investigator for several groundbreaking projects, including brain-machine interface trials. Since 2020, Dr. Chabardes is leading an innovative clinical study on the effects of intra cranial Photobiomodulation in slowing PD progression.
Professor Stéphan Chabardes is member of the French Society of Neurosurgery (SFNC), the ESSFN, and the WSSFN and he is the chair of the scientific commitee for the upcoming WSSFN congress in Marseille in 2026.
