Dr. Barbara Buccilli earned her medical degree from Sapienza University of Rome in Italy. She subsequently completed her PGY-1 year in neurosurgery in Italy, gaining foundational experience in cranial and spinal surgery. In May 2024, she began a pre-residency fellowship in cerebrovascular and neurological critical care at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she continued to advance her clinical and research expertize through May 2025.
Dr. Buccilli’s research spans multiple areas of neurosurgery, emphasizing clinical outcomes and health disparities. She collaborates with several leading research groups, including the Clinical Innovations Laboratory (Faraji Lab) at Houston Methodist, the Pilitsis Lab at the University of Arizona, and the NeuroSpine Nexus group affiliated with UT Southwestern. She is also initiating a collaboration with the orthopedic surgery research team at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
In addition, Dr. Buccilli maintains active international collaborations with neurosurgeons and neurologists in Italy and Brazil. She is the CSO of the Global Neurosurgical Alliance, an organization dedicated to making high-quality research accessible to international students and trainees while fostering mentorship and global academic colaborations.
