Dr. Bret D. Alvis is a Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, and of Biomedical Engineering at Vanderbilt University. He completed medical school at the University of Iowa, followed by residency in Anesthesiology and fellowship in Critical Care Medicine at Vanderbilt. Dr. Alvis serves as the Medical Director of the Surgical Cardiovascular ICU and the Associate Division Chief of Critical Care Medicine at VUMC. His clinical expertise centers on cardiac intensive care and enhanced recovery after surgery. As a funded investigator, he has received multiple NIH R-series grants to advance non-invasive methods for monitoring human volume status using venous waveform analysis in both adults and children. This work has resulted in multiple patents and the founding of VoluMetrix, an NIH R44-funded Vanderbilt-based startup, where he serves as Chief Medical Officer, focused on translating venous waveform analysis into clinical medical devices.
