Professor of Bioengineering
University of Texas at Arlington
Arlington, Texas, United States
Professor Liu received her Ph.D. in Physics from Wake Forest University, NC, followed by a postdoctoral training in Biomedical Optics at the University of Pennsylvania, PA. She became a faculty member in the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Texas, Arlington, in 1996, and is currently a full professor in that department. She received several prestigious awards, including the Distinguished University Professorship in 2013, a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 2016, and the Endowed Professorship by the College of Engineering Board of Advisors in 2021. She has published more than 180 peer-reviewed scientific papers and has advised more than 60 graduate students.
In recent years, Professor Liu has built her research expertise in noninvasive neuromodulation using light. Specifically, she has facilitated broadband NIRS (bbNIRS) and electroencephalogram (EEG) measurements concurrently with transcranial photobiomodulation (tPBM). The dual-mode approach enabled her team to successfully achieve noninvasive quantification of hemodynamic, metabolic, and electrophysiological effects induced by tPBM in the human head in vivo. In this new research area, her team recently published more than 20 peer-reviewed papers and demonstrated the potential of tPBM as an effective intervention tool for the treatment of patients with neurological disorders.
