Elizabeth C. Tyler-Kabara, MD, PhD, is a nationally recognized pediatric neurosurgeon and physician-scientist whose career integrates complex clinical care with transformative innovation in neuromodulation and neurotechnology. She earned her MD and PhD in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics from Vanderbilt University, followed by neurosurgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh. Her pediatric fellowship was completed at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. Returning to the University of Pittsburgh, she became an early contributor to human BCI research.
She has held leadership roles building and expanding pediatric neurosurgery and neuroscience programs, most recently at Dell Medical School at The University of Texas at Austin. Her work has helped shape pediatric epilepsy surgery, complex craniofacial reconstruction, functional neurosurgery, and multidisciplinary programs that achieved national ranking in U.S. News & World Report.
Her research portfolio spans neuromodulation, gene and cell-based therapies, and translational device development. She collabotrates extensively with engineers, neuroscientists, and industry partners to accelerate bench discovery to bedside applications, particularly in restorative neurotechnologies for children.
A dedicated educator and mentor, she has trained medical and engineering students, residents, and fellows. She is widely sought for her expertise in device translation, clinical trial design for neurotechnology, and ethical frameworks for restorative and augmentative neuromodulation.
